Food Waste
① ( Have you ever heard of “food waste”?// ) It means wasting food/we can still eat. Worldwide,/over 1.3 billion tons of food/is thrown away each year. This is one third of total food/produced in the world. With this amount of food,/we could feed all of the people/suffering from hunger. Why does food waste happen?
② ( I will explain the main reasons/for food waste.// ) In many developed countries,/people tend to buy/or order more food/than they actually consume. Moreover,/stores and restaurants tend to keep more food/than necessary/for their customers. That extra food is thrown away as garbage/in the end.
③ ( Next,/I’d like to introduce some solutions/to this problem.// ) In France,/by law,/large supermarkets have to donate their unsold food/to a charity organization. Charities then sell the food/to people in need/at discounted prices. In Japan,/the government made a law/in 2019. The law aims to reduce/the amount of food waste/in factories, shops, and households.
④ ( Finally,/let’s think about/what we can do.// ) First,/we can try to buy or order/only the amount of food/we need. Second,/we can try to take home leftovers/if we can’t finish the food in restaurants. There may be more things/that we can do/in our daily lives. Let’s work together locally/and make a difference globally.
