1One area of Japanese culture that has had an impact on foreign cultures is ukiyoe.  2In the middle of the 19th century, ukiyoe  influenced many artists in Europe.  3In the picture above, painted by Monet in 1876, you can see a woman looking back over her shoulder, in a colorful kimono, with a Japanese fan.  4This is exactly the image of ukiyoe  that Europeans of the time felt.  5The enthusiasm for Japanese art, called Japonism, was not only limited to paintings but also extended to crafts, fashion, drama, architecture and many other fields.
