Go Green: Singapore
Singapore is a city-state to the south of Malaysia.//
Although it is a densely populated country, it aims to maintain a clean and green environment.//
In order to deal with the slums and overcrowding of the 1960s, the town planners have focused their attention on promoting green living.//
One hotel, which is located downtown, is equipped with rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems on the roof, as well as being designed to make the hotel self-shaded.//
The hotel has a wall of tropical mosses in the wood-paneled lobby.//
In addition, a Tree Planting Day has been held each year since 1971, on which people plant young trees throughout the island.//
One planner says, “As we become more and more urbanized, we want to make sure the environment we have developed is sustainable.”//
Now about half of the land surface is covered with greenery.//
