Go Green: Singapore
Singapore is a city-state to the south of Malaysia. Although it is a densely populated country, it aims to maintain a clean and green environment. In order to deal with the slums and overcrowding of the 1960s, the town planners have focused their attention on promoting green living.
One hotel, which is located downtown, is equipped with rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems on the roof, as well as being designed to make the hotel self-shaded. The hotel has a wall of tropical mosses in the wood-paneled lobby. In addition, a Tree Planting Day has been held each year since 1971, on which people plant young trees throughout the island.
One planner says, “As we become more and more urbanized, we want to make sure the environment we have developed is sustainable.” Now about half of the land surface is covered with greenery.
