Japanese scientists rescued the albatross on Torishima from extinction using the following procedure.
(1)First, they began an “Operation Decoy” in 1991, in which figures of albatrosses and sound lures were used to attract wild birds from their habitat on the island.
Since the habitat was on a steep slope and susceptible to landslides, scientists tried to move the birds to a safer place on the same island.
The operation was successful and some albatrosses began to make their home in the new colony.
(2)Then, the scientists waited for pairs to produce young ones.
In 1995, the first chick was hatched there.
(3)Finally, the scientists started a relocation project, in which the chicks were transported to Mukojima, one of the Ogasawara Islands, because Torishima is a volcanic island and it could erupt at any moment.
As a result, the total population in 2011 reached more than 2,000, and the new colonies have been established through the efforts of the scientists.
