Marina Tex
A young British university student,/Lucy Hughes,/has created a new biodegradable material,/Marina Tex. It is a material/that can replace plastic film,/such as a sandwich wrapper. The material will break down naturally/within four to six weeks. It is made from fish scales and skin,/which are mixed with algae. These are wasted/in the fishing industry/in the UK.
Her innovation began/in a product design course. Since she lives near the ocean,/she thought of using the waste/to create biodegradable plastic. She did more than 100 experiments/to find the best mixture/for the bioplastic. Most of them were carried out/on the kitchen stove/in her student accommodation.
In 2019,/she was given an international award/for the best invention/by a young scientist.
