Biologging
A small recording instrument,/which is called a data logger,/is attached to animals.//
Carrying the logger,/the animals collect data/in the natural environment.//
Biologging has developed/since the 1980s.//
Japan now leads the world/in this new technology.//
The data logger has realized the dream of studying the behavior of aquatic animals,/such as penguins or seals.//
Before,/we couldn’t track them/once they dived into the sea.//
In 2017,/five sea turtles with data loggers/were released into the Arafura Sea.//
When they dived for food,/the data loggers recorded the sea temperatures.//
When they came up to breathe,/the data was sent to the research center/through a satellite.//
The turtles dived repeatedly/to a depth of over 100 meters/for about three months.//
It was this project/that revealed both sea turtle behavior and accurate sea temperatures.//
Oceans cover almost 70% of the earth’s surface.//
So,/it is extremely important/to record water temperatures precisely.//
This will help prevent/weather disasters and global warming.//
What science has revealed/is amazing/and many facts are still to be discovered.//
The smaller the data loggers become,/the more they will be used/with a wider range of animals.//
Biologging will evolve.//
This will allow us/to obtain more valuable data/about animals and the natural environment.//
