The Christmas Truce
World WarⅠ,/which was also called the Great War,/was a terrible event. It started in the summer of 1914/and continued until November 1918/— over four long years. It was fought in Europe/between the Allied Powers,/made up mostly of British, French and Russian armies,/and the Central Powers,/which included soldiers from Germany, the Austria-Hungary Empire, Turkey and Bulgaria.
In the beginning,/many of the countries believed/the war would end quickly. Each army thought/that their side would win. Most soldiers hoped/they would be home for Christmas. But they were wrong. At the end of 1914,/after five months of bloody fighting,/tens of thousands of people had died. And the war had a long way to go.
