And the Christmas Truce is remembered,/too.
It has inspired many books, movies and songs,/which tell how soldiers put down their guns,/walked across No Man’s Land,/and shook hands.
They explain how young men shared food,/talked of their families,/and hoped to celebrate the next Christmas/at home with their loved ones.
For these young men,/the Christmas Truce was a very special event.
In 1914,/after Christmas Day was over,/fighting started again along the Western Front. The Great War had returned/and would continue for several more years. Sadly,/the Christmas Truce was never repeated.
But for a brief moment at Christmastime in 1914,/there really was peace on earth.
