Does AI make you nervous?
Do you get the feeling that AI is changing everything?
I do, and it worries me.
Sometimes, I see a future in which AI does everything.
AI will drive our cars.
Clean our houses.
Cook and serve our meals.
Teach our kids.
In that future, we’ll be able to sit around all day, playing video games, watching movies and streaming K-Pop.
We’ll all be happy couch potatoes.
Sometimes I see a dark and frightening future.
Strong, autonomous robots will be in charge of everything.
They will take our jobs, run our government.
AI will rule the world, and we will just be slaves.
We’ll sit around all day playing video games, watching movies and streaming K-Pop.
We’ll all be unhappy couch potatoes.
If such thoughts bother you, too, you will be happy to learn that not every scientist is trying to make strong autonomous robots.
Some scientists, like Professor Okada Michio at Toyohashi University of Technology, are working on what they call “weak robots:”
Friendly little machines that work with people rather than in place of people.
Read all about it in this lesson.
