I can’t agree that Japan should promote early bilingual education. I think there is a risk of not acquiring either their mother tongue or the second language well enough, if children receive early bilingual education. In fact, one study shows that the vocabulary in the mother tongue of bilingual people can be smaller than that of monolingual people. In my opinion, we should give priority to the development of children’s reading and writing skills in their mother tongue.
