London — National Park City
When you hear of London,/you may think of Big Ben,/a double-decker bus,/or fish and chips.//
Actually,/London is also famous/as a green city.//
It has about 3,000 parks/and almost as many trees/as its population.//
Nearly 15,000 species of animals and plants/live in the city.//
In 2019,/London declared/that it would become/the world’s first National Park City.//
With this declaration,//London aims to keep its green areas/and turn itself into a healthier city.//
One reason for this/is the expected population growth.//
It is possible/that the green areas will be destroyed/for building houses.//
The starting point of this declaration/was a proposal/by a high school geography teacher.//
He believed/that preserving nature in the city/would be a countermeasure/against climate change.//
He also thought/that it would provide playgrounds for children/and habitats for wildlife.//
Now several cities in the UK, the US, and Australia/are following this trend.//
This movement may spread further/across the world.//
