Magawa: The Mine-Detecting Rat
Magawa was a giant pouched rat/which could detect landmines. He was born in 2013/in Tanzania, Africa. He was trained to find landmines/together with other rats. The rats are suitable for the job/because they are good at smelling. They are also light enough/to walk over minefields/without setting off the landmines.
In 2016,/he was sent to Cambodia,/where he helped humans/safely remove landmines. Compared with other skilled rats,/Magawa was a standout sniffer. In his career,/he helped clear the area/about the size of 31 soccer fields. He found 71 landmines/and 38 unexploded bombs. Magawa is believed/to have saved many lives/in Cambodia.
Because of his great contribution to peace,/he was awarded a gold medal for animals/by a UK charity association/in 2020. He was the first rat/that received this special honor. It is amazing/that such a small animal/could help so many people.
