UKIYO-E — Traditional Japanese Woodblock Prints and Paintings
Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese genre of art. Artists mostly produced woodblock prints and paintings, and they tended not to be expensive. The subjects of ukiyo-e ranged from famous actors and beautiful women to interesting animals and landscapes.
Ukiyo-e illustrated something known as “the floating world.” The floating world, or “ukiyo,” consisted of the worldly pleasures experienced by the citizens of Edo in the early 1700s. The citizens of this time were relatively wealthy and enjoyed spending money on everything from theater to fashion.
